How It Works

Retirement planning combines what you already have with what you add each month, grown at an assumed average return. The 4% rule is a common guideline for sustainable annual withdrawals.

Formula Used

FV = P(1 + r/12)^(12t) + c · [((1 + r/12)^(12t) − 1) / (r/12)]; income ≈ 4% × FV.

Example Calculation

Starting at 30 with $25,000, adding $400 at the end of each month at a 7% nominal annual return compounded monthly until 65 projects to about $1,008,076 — about $40,323 per year using the illustrative 4% rule.
