Ratio Calculator
Simplify a ratio to its lowest terms and solve A:B = C:x proportions for the missing value.
Quick guide
Enter the two terms of a ratio (A and B) to simplify it to lowest terms. Add an optional third value C to solve the proportion A:B = C:x for the missing term.
Read the full explanationHow It Works
A ratio compares two quantities. Dividing both terms by their greatest common divisor gives the simplest form; equivalent ratios scale both terms by the same factor.
Formula Used
Simplest form: A÷g : B÷g where g = gcd(A, B). Proportion: if A:B = C:x then x = B·C ÷ A.
Example Calculation
12:18 simplifies to 2:3. If 2:3 = 10:x, then x = 3 × 10 ÷ 2 = 15.
Practical Use Cases
- Scale recipes, maps, and models.
- Split costs or ingredients fairly.
- Solve proportion problems in algebra.
