Math Calculators
Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions with automatic simplification, plus decimal and mixed-number equivalents.
Quick guide
Enter two fractions as numerators and denominators and pick an operation: add, subtract, multiply, or divide. The result is reduced to its simplest form and also shown as a mixed number and a decimal.
Read the full explanationHow It Works
Fraction arithmetic follows fixed rules: addition and subtraction need a common denominator, multiplication multiplies straight across, and division flips the second fraction. Results are reduced by the greatest common divisor.
Formula Used
a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) ÷ bd; a/b ÷ c/d = (a·d) ÷ (b·c); simplify by gcd(numerator, denominator).
Example Calculation
1/2 + 3/4 = (1·4 + 3·2) ÷ 8 = 10/8 = 5/4 = 1¼ = 1.25.
Practical Use Cases
- Check homework and show clean simplified answers.
- Scale recipes up or down.
- Work with measurements in inches and feet.
