Conversion Calculators

Data Storage Converter

Convert digital storage between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB).

Quick guide

Enter a value and choose the units to convert between bits, bytes, decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB), and binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). Decimal units use 1,000 and binary units use 1,024, which is why a 500 GB drive shows about 465 GiB.

How It Works

Storage uses two systems: decimal SI units (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, used by drive makers) and binary IEC units (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, used by operating systems) — which is why a “500 GB” drive shows about 465 GiB.

Formula Used

value × from-factor ÷ to-factor (base unit: byte).

Example Calculation

1 GB = 1,000 MB = 0.931 GiB; 1 byte = 8 bits.

Practical Use Cases

  • Understand advertised vs. shown drive capacity.
  • Convert file sizes and download amounts.
  • Compare bandwidth (bits) with storage (bytes).
